SCOTLAND Reports

Aberdeenshire and the North East: For four weeks during July and August, Dan Gillies had his tent in Newmachar and then Blackburn, near Aberdeen. A good number of children, and a few parents, came to the children’s meetings, and some others were brought to the later gospel meetings, mainly from Aberdeen. Brethren from the Fountain Hall assembly shared in the meetings - Graeme Smith with the children at Newmachar, where he has since commenced a weekly children’s meeting, and Eddie Lamont with the children in Blackburn, where he conducts a weekly children’s meeting in the local school. In Blackburn Iain Lewis and Paul McLarty shared the later gospel meetings with Dan on alternate evenings.

At Newmachar, the tent ridgepole snapped in high winds. In the mercy of God this happened in the afternoon, and no one was injured. The pole was repaired and the tent was ready in time for the gospel meeting.

Please remember in prayer three people in particular– a man from Methlick, a village 20 miles away, who attended several times of his own accord; a Blackburn man who came on the last night of the meetings and has since been attending the Fountain Hall gospel meeting; and a woman in her twenties, who professed salvation after one of the Blackburn meetings at which Alex McLean from Peterhead had given his testimony. This lady has, in the past, suffered from drug addiction. Brother Dan wishes to thank all who prayed for these meetings - this is much appreciated.

Although, generally speaking, this year’s northern summer weather was not very good, the brethren from Cullen are very thankful to report that their yearly district open-air and tract work was completed – very unusually – without missing a night. Prayer is valued for the seed sown, also for a week of children’s meetings with George Forbes, purposed for the end of October prior to the commencement of the regular winter children’s work, and for the monthly special gospel meeting in Portknockie.

Fife and Tayside: Over the holiday period, several assemblies have been able to reach out with the gospel at local fairs and gala days. At St Monans in June good contacts were made at the harbour on "Sea Queen Day" where about 1000 people passed the bookstall and read the large texts. At Arbroath at the "Sea Food Festival" in July, a large crowd was out in good weather and many heard a presentation of the gospel and received a copy of a specially prepared tract called The Arbroath Smokie. At the Perth Show in August over three days a bookstall was manned and a good witness made to many who showed some interest.

Also some assemblies held a children’s Holiday Club during a week of the school holidays. Good numbers attended at Lochee, Dundee, Abbott Hall, Dunfermline, and St Monans, with many parents attending the final meetings in most cases. The week of outreach in early August at St Andrews with Jim McMaster was well supported and much work was done to sow the Seed in the busy town among young and old, with meetings in the open air and in the Gospel Hall. Tracts were also distributed widely and included many of the coastal and inland towns south of St Andrews where gospel witness is scarce. At Kennoway their second outreach weekend for this summer was at the end of August with open air preaching on Saturday and Lord’s day afternoons. Robert Muir of Cowdenbeath preached God’s Word both evenings. On all of these efforts, and many others, to reach the needy but indifferent people of Scotland, we pray for God’s blessing.

Dunbar: During July, Stephen Grant and Jim Paterson (jnr) had a series of Gospel meetings in this East Lothian town using the portable hall. The meetings were well attended with unsaved present each evening. One elderly man attended each night of the meetings and was clearly concerned. Local Baptist believers also attended regularly and were encouraged by the Gospel being preached in the town. Children’s meetings were held each evening, and, although numbers were not large, the children who attended showed good interest. These meetings were shared by Graeme Paterson. It was sad to see the lack of Biblical knowledge shown by the children, however each child received a copy of the Scriptures, which for many was the first copy of the Bible that they had ever possessed. The fellowship of saints from various assemblies who travelled to support the meetings was greatly appreciated. Please pray for this area of Scotland, and future work planned, God willing.
