With Christ

Mrs Cora Bunn died on 7th August in her 96th year after a short period of declining health. In 1933 she was added to the assembly at Glan-y-Llyn, a village 8 miles north of Cardiff, and for the next 75 years she served the Lord faithfully, unremittingly and unobtrusively. Mrs Bunn was a godly woman whose prayer life encompassed saints, families, and the Lord’s servants on a geographical scale far beyond that into which she had ever ventured herself. However, it is not possible within the constraints of these lines to detail what she did and what was achieved – that is left to Another who is not unrighteous to forget her work and labour of love, which she showed toward His name. Many, including the present writer, have one less person sustaining us in prayer but we would all concur that "Truly the memory of the just is blessed".

Mr Sam Campbell, aged 94, called home on 25th July. Our dear brother was for many years associated with the assembly at Dundesert where his consistent and spiritual contributions were greatly appreciated. He was predeceased by his wife last September, and over the years they were much given to hospitality and the encouragement of the Lord’s people. Sam was a lover of the Scriptures and always had a "word in season" ready for the occasion. He was preserved for many years in good health and had clarity of mind right to the end, being able to be present at the Lord’s Supper until two weeks before his homecall. His funeral services were conducted by B Currie and D Gilliland. Prayer is valued for his three sons and their families, as well as for the small assembly at Dundesert.

Mr Frank Jones, aged 84, was called home on 17th July after years of health problems. Saved in September 1961 when attending meetings conducted by the late John Curran in Larne, he was baptised and received into the Pound Street Assembly, Larne, eventually moving to the Craigyhill Assembly. In 1994 he and his wife May moved to live in Ballyclare and were in the assembly there until Frank’s homecall. Our brother’s gracious deportment commended the gospel which he loved to spread by personal witnessing and by tract distribution. Please remember May in prayer and also her son and two daughters with their family circles at home and abroad. The funeral services were conducted by Mr Albert Graham and local brethren.

Mr Ian McCue, aged 49, was called home on 3rd August after a period of illness. He was saved at meetings in Plains conducted by Mr Jim Smyth in 1980, baptised in Hebron Hall, Airdrie, and came into fellowship there. After his marriage to Agnes Bell he came to Greengairs and was in fellowship with the saints in the Back Brae Gospel Hall. Although Ian was a quiet brother he was consistent, reliable, and took part locally; he will be missed. Please remember his wife Agnes, his mother and brothers.

Mrs Sadie Mawhinney, aged 95, widow of David Mawhinney, was called home on 21st July. Sadie was saved at the age of 6 and in her early life was in fellowship in Adam Street, Belfast. She and David had an exercise to serve the Lord together in Central Africa from their very first meeting, and in 1946 they set sail for Northern Rhodesia with their baby daughter, Helen, where their devoted service was richly blessed by God in saved and changed lives and in the establishment of New Testament assemblies. Their labours in Africa, first at Dipolata, then Chitokoloki and finally Lumwana, were brought to a close after 36 years through David’s disabling rheumatoid arthritis. They returned to N. Ireland where they had 10 years together prior to David’s homecall, proving to be a blessing wherever they went. Sadie remained in their home in Broughshane and in the assembly there until her move to Faith House when she joined Windsor assembly. She retained her active interest in Africa throughout, knitting garments for the Sunday School work there until her closing days. Brethren from the three above-mentioned assemblies participated in her funeral services in Broughshane, where a large company gathered to honour the memory of a life lived for God.

Mr E (Ted) G Mizen, aged 92, of the Ware (Herts) assembly was called home on 27th July after a few months of increasing frailty. Originally from Trowbridge, he attended Corsham Gospel Hall, where he came to know the Lord. After his marriage in 1948 he moved to the Essex area and then to Ware. He has been a pillar in the assembly since joining in 1961 being active in the children’s work and among older folk. The funeral service conducted by D Tinkler was attended by many of Ted’s neighbours and local villagers, one of whom said, "How can anyone be sad after a service like that". Prayer is requested for the assembly as they are now down to a very small number.

Mrs May Parks, on 14th May. Saved as a girl of 9, she was received into the Broomhedge Assembly after her marriage to Bertie and continued there until November, 2007 when with her son she was commended to the fellowship of Dromore. A quiet, spiritual, consistent, discerning sister who was loved and very highly respected by all, she was lovingly cared for during the last four months of illness. She will be greatly missed. Her large funeral was eloquent testimony to the high esteem in which she was held by the saints and the community.
